Eastern Washington has some crazy clouds!

Back in Seattle today. I have a three-day work week, then I’m off to Portland Friday through Monday for a conference. Not a conference for work – just for me!

I’ll try to find time to do an 8-mile run in PDX. Any route recommendations, Portlanders? I’m staying downtown, right along the Willamette River!

Aaron and I are in Kennewick for the weekend, staying with his dad and stepmom. Eastern Washington is beautiful in such a different way than Western Washington! There’s lots of sun, rolling hills and a more deserty climate than the rainy area west of the Cascades. We are loving the sun!!

We did our first 10-mile run yesterday in 1:40 – 10:00 pace. We stopped at a gas station 5 miles in for a refreshing Powerade/energy bar fix. We ran past cows and horses in the hot sun… we weren’t in Seattle anymore!

Aside from my knees hurting a bit near the end, I felt good about the run and our pace. Less than one month to go till my first half-marathon!!

P.S. Just booked a trip! Aaron and I will be in NYC Sept. 30 through Oct. 3!!

I ate this right after my 15K last weekend and it was the bomb diggity (technical term).

Strawberry-pineapple smoothie with soy milk and chia seeds in a bowl, topped with Kashi Go Lean Crisp Toasted Berry Crumble.

You get the refreshment of a smoothie AND the crunch/heartiness of cereal. You get to use a spoon AND a straw.

Credit goes to Meghann at Meals and Miles for the yummy smoothie/cereal combo idea! It’s a new fave!

Half cup of oats, 1 cup water, 1 Tbsp chia seeds, lots o’ berries. A typical breakfast!

I’m very hungry first thing in the morning and never skip breakfast. Today, I took it to a new level, as I ate some cereal WHILE making the oatmeal. I was THAT hungry.

Stay outta my way once I start marathon training. I can only imagine the hunger…

Hi there — I recently moved to Seattle, and I am looking for a running group. I notice that you go track workouts every week. Is it an open-membership club? Is there a fee? How can I find out more? Thanks – and congrats on your great race this past weekend. J

Hi, new Seattlite! Hope you’re loving this beautiful city so far.

I run with the American Cancer Society’s DetermiNation team to train for the Seattle Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon on June 25. It’s the first running group I’ve been a part of, and I love it! You can join DetermiNation or the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Team in Training to train for a specific event. I highly recommend it if you want to stick to a great training plan, meet new people and raise money for a good cause!

Otherwise, you can check out the Seattle Running Club and this page on Meetup.com, which lists a variety of formal and informal running groups in the Seattle area. Some health clubs have their own running groups, too, so you can check into that if you plan on joining a gym. Good luck!

My return to the gym

Oh yeah, I belong to a gym! I’ve been running outside so much that I haven’t been to my gym in more than a month. I know because the last time I was there, I checked out some books from the nearby library, and now they’re about a week overdue…

So I returned the books, and returned to the gym for a quick 1.5 treadmill run, immediately followed by a 75-minute power yoga class. I was dripping sweat during yoga. If anyone thinks it isn’t a workout, just find a faster-paced class and you’ll get your sweat on for sure!!

I was very pleasantly surprised with how comfortable I am at a faster pace on the treadmill. 10:00/mi used to be my warmup pace and 9:30 was my manageable-but-sort-of-hard pace. This time, 9:30 wasn’t challenging at all, and I ended up running comfortably-but-sort-of-hard at 8:27.

I popped off the treadmill when it was time for yoga and I wasn’t even out of breath as I cleaned the machine. Crazy!!

I was a 10:00/mi girl for so long. It feels good to know how far I’ve come… and dream about how far I’ll go.
