Back in it, baby!

4.1 miles in 45 minutes on the treadmill last night, mostly at a 10:30 pace except for the minute-and-a-half I walked due to a side stitch and the 30 seconds I paused to drink water (mmm, so good).

No knee pain to report!! Perhaps it was all the rest (laziness) that did me good, or the new way I’m tying my shoelaces.

Don’s chiropractor, who’s a marathoner, showed him how to make loops through the last laceholes of his shoes, then pull each lace through the opposite loop and tie them as usual. It’s supposed to help stabilize your feet inside the shoes and keep them from sliding around. I did this on Monday, and voila! No knee pain from my Monday or Tuesday runs.

I vaguely remember this technique from running track in junior high, but I didn’t bother to look it up. Yay, marathoner/chiropractor!

I’ve also been trying to improve my stride as I run. Dean Karnazes writes in one of his books that it’s best (in terms of injury prevention and running efficiency) to strike the ground with your midfoot as opposed to your heel or toe, and you can work on this by leaning forward slightly when you run. (Look up some official advice about this before you take my word for it; I ain’t no expert!)

Between the shoelaces and the gangster lean, I’m feeling pretty good and happy about getting back into running. Only a few weeks left till the 5K and polar bear plunge on 1/1/11!

Slowly but surely

Last night I ran a mile on the treadmill in just over 10 minutes, then did the 30 Day Shred level 1 (Jillian Michaels DVD).

The sad thing here is that I huffed and puffed my way through something that used to be too easy of a workout!! Level 2 was my jam, but I didn’t dare attempt it last night since I’ve been busy getting out of shape for a whole month now (I think I left on the cruise exactly a month ago). I even struggled with GIRL PUSHUPS, and I used to be able to do 8 solid real pushups. Ohhh, how far I’ve fallen!

My eating hasn’t been great either. So many treats are everywhere and I haven’t hesitated to take part in all of them (residual vacation mentality, perhaps?). I’ve also been getting lazy with lunch and going out to eat more often, which hurts my wallet and makes me feel stuffed and lethargic for the rest of the day. Back to fresh salads, veggies and hummus for me.

It’s time to get back on track… slowly but surely!

Moving (but not running)

Ahhhh! No running or exercise of any kind has taken place since Tuesday. Happy hour, townhouse wrangling and one massive cookie from Cow Chip have happened, though.

Such a busy weekend ahead. Where to fit in running? Company holiday party tonight, procuring Christmas tree tomorrow morning, an early Christmas dinner tomorrow afternoon/evening (it’s never too early!), a holiday brunch Sunday morning and – fingers crossed – hopefully signing a townhouse lease Sunday afternoon.

Where, where, where to fit it in?

Also, I will miss the treadmill when I move out of my mom’s place. A LOT. Running outside after work in the cold/rain/dark until spring comes doesn’t sound all that fun.

I need to (wo)man up in preparation.

I just found this photo from my very first 5K — the Fremont Oktoberfest Brew HA-HA in late September.

My first finish line. And now I have this photo to help me remember it forever! Super cool.

Today I ran for the first time since Thanksgiving morning. (Still feeling pretty virtuous about that one, btw.) I felt out of shape, but it was still immediately great to be back on the treadmill. I get really excited just to move after being cubed up all day at work.

I ran for 14 minutes and then had to walk for 2 before I could run 14 more for a total of 30 minutes (2.85 miles). I was feeling kind of bad about this until I realized that the following things took place in the last several weeks:

1) A week-long vacation, during which I ate and drank to my heart’s content (and exercised very little).
2) A four-day trip to California, which included the most gluttonous holiday of them all.
3) A pretty crappy sinus/mucas-y sickness (eww) that hit me hard Tuesday through Thursday of last week. (I signed up for the half marathon in the midst of this sickness. I’m completely crazy.)

Realizing that I had all these elements (especially the sickness) working against me made me feel a little better, and I’m excited to get back into a running/working out routine. I think I was sweating sugar tonight, as I ate an overabundance of delicious and terrible things at work today, so it’s also time to get back into a healthy eating routine.

Finding that finish line picture today has really motivated me to work hard and cross the next finish line a bit faster : )

While you’re sleeping off your hangover…

…I’ll be running the 2011 Resolution Run 5K. January 1st, baby. Great way to kick off the New Year!

There’s an optional “polar bear dive” portion of the race. I’m obviously doing it. I mean, completely submerge myself in Lake Washington in the middle of what’s supposed to be a wickedly cold and harsh winter? Duh.

From the Web site: “Participants in this 3.1 mile run/walk can choose to stay dry and compete in the standard 5K run/walk or they can choose to select the optional Polar Bear Dive 5K that takes a brief detour into Lake Washington roughly 100 yards before the 5K finish line. Results for the standard 5K and the Polar Bear 5K will be scored separately. Roughly 60% of the 1,780+ race registrants last year chose the Polar Bear Dive option.”

Once upon a time (like a few months ago), I would’ve been too chickenshit to do something like this. Maybe I would have done the run, but definitely not the polar bear part. Now I’m just freakishly excited about it. Huh.

I’ll be running/diving with my race partner, Aaron, who doesn’t exactly enjoy being cold, yet didn’t hesitate when I asked him to do this with me. Such a badass.

We’re totally making team t-shirts.

With this 5K, the half marathon and so much else to look forward to in the next year, I can safely say that 2011 is going to be awesome!!
