Patience. Passion. A plan.

My first 10K is 6 weeks away. I’m intimidated by the idea of running a 10K, even though I’m already signed up for a 15K and half marathon, because I’ve gotten comfortable with 5Ks (I’ve run 6) and the first step up to racing a new distance seems the most terrifying.

I’m also coming off of one week of being really sick and one week of being on vacation. Just getting back into running, let alone starting to train for a new distance, seems daunting.

But today I remembered something I wrote when I was in the midst of getting out of debt. I wrote that to achieve any goal, you need to have three things: patience, passion and a plan.

Everything begins with passion –  the passion to achieve a goal, whether it’s becoming debt-free, losing weight or tackling a race. That passion will fuel your plan, which is a written roadmap of everything you need to do to achieve your goal. Patience is what helps see you through all the doubts and roadbumps you’ll encounter along the way.

I love Zig Ziglar’s quote: “If you aim at nothing, you will hit it every time.” For me, a written plan gives strong legs to the passion I feel for tackling this 10K – I just spent my lunch break creating my training plan. It gives me something concrete to aim for, every single day.

I may not hit what I’m aiming for all the time – sometimes my humanness will get in the way – but I know I’ll succeed in the end because I’ve aimed at something.

And whenever I have doubts, I’ll just remind myself that I already have everything I need to crush this race. Patience. Passion. A plan.

Sadly, all of this is now 2,678 miles away.

I’m back in Seattle after eight days on Oahu, and I’m currently adjusting to:

a) being inside more often than outside
b) not eating whatever I want, whenever I want
c) wearing pants

I really hate that last one. It was rough tucking my shorts, skirts and dresses into the very bottoms of my drawers and back of my closet, knowing I won’t need them for quite some time in the great Pacific Northwest.

But this was a fantastic trip, and I spent the last evening sipping some of my favorite beer at the Kona pub and watching a spectacular sunset. What more could a girl ask for?

Now back to your regularly scheduled running/gym-going/eating right!

Boogie boarding. Snorkeling. Surfing (awesome lesson!). Skydiving. Hiking. Swimming. Running. Eating like there’s no tomorrow.

It’s been an active vacation. Honolulu weather cannot make up its mind right now — it’s been windy, rainy and sunny in the last hour — but we’ve done some darn fun stuff in the sunshine so far.

My big plans for the rest of the trip include using a Groupon I have for sushi and soaking up as much sun as I can before I return to rainy snowy God-only-knows-what Seattle.

Did my first run in about two weeks yesterday!! I was REALLY sick the week before leaving on vacation, and I’ve been on vacation/still recovering from sickness this whole past week.

We ran from our hotel along Waikiki Beach up toward Diamond Head Beach Park (about 1.5 miles) and then kept walking through some super rich neighborhoods. One house was for sale for $6 million and it didn’t even have an ocean view!! I can’t even imagine what the ocean view/oceanfront houses cost…

We walked back to where we stopped running (it was really hot by this point) and then ran the 1.5 miles back to the beach. We then ripped off our shoes and socks and ran right into the water (significantly warmer water than the kind we ran into during the Polar Bear Dive). It was the best end to a run ever!

Overall, it was nearly 6 miles of running/walking. It felt good to get back to running, but I’ll enjoy the cooler weather of Seattle for my outdoor runs when I get home. : )

We went skydiving over the North Shore of Oahu yesterday. This was my second time, and it was wayyyy better than my first time for the following reasons:

1. I was in Hawaii.
2. They let me jump in just my shorts and tank top because it’s Hawaii.
3. I jumped out over the water and I got to see whales during the freefall. Because I was in Hawaii.
4. My tandem instructor flipped us out of the plane backwards this time and we did a bunch of flips. Probably because he lives in Hawaii, so he likes to do cool stuff like that.
5. My ears didn’t pop violently this time, and I didn’t have a headache afterward. Instead, I went snorkeling afterward. Hawaii.

OK, I’m done! If you’re in Oahu, I highly recommend Skydive Hawaii!!

GPOYW: Super-Sketchy Old Navy Fitting Room Edition

Yes, it’s still Wednesday on the West BEST coast! You heard me.

It’s REALLY hard to find comfortable shorts that aren’t too short/tight or too long/baggy. Who woulda thought Old Navy would come through with these basic chino shorts for only $19??

(It’s not shorts weather in Seattle, unfortunately. But it is in Hawaii — where I will be landing in about 48 hours!!)
